Makes Sense To Me
Twice in the past two days I have had almost identical group discussions with different groups. The first time it came up as a topic at Shabbat lunch, and the second time while I was sitting in traffic with some co-workers. I was only person present at both convos and I did not initiate either of them. The topic was the price of cars. I said (both times) if the government would drop the 150% tax it places on new cars the economy would boom. People would be able to move out of the city and get jobs. They would be able to go further for better paying jobs, and would be able to pay less for housing once out of the major cities. Not to mention, more people would be buying cars. Both times I was met with the most discouraging counter. More cars on the streets would only bring more accidents, more deaths, more traffic, more polution, and more poverty (b/c people would be faced with paying for gas, maintenance, and insurance) I still think the economy would be better off with more affordable cars.

The more death, more traffic, etc argument is complete garbage. Your argument makes a lot more sense. Their argument could be the same for anything else. Well, if more people don't buy cars, then more people will take trains. If more people take trains, there'll be more trains. If there's more trains, there'll be more deaths and train accidents. You know what I'm saying? If they stop making the trains and no cars, then more people will be forced to live in the cities. If more people live in the cities, there will be more human pollution. There'll be more traffic, and more deaths. It's a completely illegitimate ad hoc argument. I totally agree with you, and it's documented. When people own cars, their economic opportunities vastly increase.

I am rather impressed that there are two recentt posts in a row!
You are obviously a spoiled American. Just take an Egged or Tremp like everyone ekse:)
if there are more cars, more people can get to the hospital when they need to without having to wait for an ambulance. it takes about 8 minutes for an ambulance to show from the time of the call, and those minutes can be precious.
She usually walks.
